Cyrille Regis - A Legend Lays to Rest

Monday came as a shock to many in the footballing world as West Bromwich Albion Legend Cyrille Regis passed away at the age of 59.

Legends in sports are defined by statistics whether it be goals, assists or appearances, but Regis made history on another level – changing societal prejudice and inspiring a generation of players to fight against it.

Regis was one of the first Black players to not only play in the top flight of English football but represent England in the international stage in a time of racism.

Originally from French Guiana, Regis joined the Baggies from non-league side Hayes in 1977 and contributed as part of a trio called ‘The Three Degrees’ with two other pioneering Black athletes in Laurie Cunningham and Brendon Batson.

He went on to score 112 goals for West Brom before moving to Coventry City in 1984.

It is people like Regis, Cunningham and Batson that should always be remembered in the sport filled with sponsorship deals and millionaire wages.

Without the strength these athletes had in the face of racism, change would have not been made in the world of football and BAME players would’ve still been marginalised.

Even if players in the Premier League earn extensive salaries, they should stay humble to the game as the previous generation fought for them on the field.

It is rare moments like these that people appreciate the beautiful game for it’s unity and movement for a better future.

May Cyrille Regis rest in peace.
