European football titans Manchester United have finally decided to introduce a women’s squad to their star-studded team.

The decision has come only a few months after England Women’s manager Phil Neville was asked if his former team would ever see females wearing the red shirt.

Neville said he was “urging” United to establish a women’s side and now in late March, Manchester United executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward has announced the clubs intentions.

He told the press that the Red Devils have submitted an application to The Football Association in hopes of introducing a squad to the second tier of the Women’s Super League.

“We are pleased to announce that the club intends to establish its first ever professional women’s team and has submitted an application to enter WSL2,” Woodward said.

Though United have had substantial success in both Domestic and European Football, many have questioned why it has taken so long for them to establish a women’s team.

Now they will join rivals Chelsea, Arsenal, Manchester City and Liverpool in bringing progress to their club’s history.

Woodward mentioned that he wants the women’s side to be just as historically part of United rather than treated differently, contributing to the club’s legacy.

“The Manchester United women’s team must be built in the same image and with the same principles as the men’s first team and offer academy players a clear route to top-level football within the club.”

Though arguably there has been a slump in the club’s first team success, Man United still maintain their name as a powerhouse with consistent achievements at youth level.

Having a women’s side will without a doubt bring more success to the club and perhaps encourage more female to take part in the sport.

To top it all off, Manchester United has the largest international fan base in the sports history.

This will mean that the WSL as well as women’s football in general will get the viewership and attention it deserves for housing equally talented athletes.

With the application submitted, it’s only a matter of time until the FA announces Manchester United’s Women’s team for the WSL.
