Believe in yourself. Whatever it is you want to do or focus your energy on. You should believe in yourself and have faith that you can achieve it.
Over the years there have been many inspirational quotes about having self-faith and the ability to believe in yourself to really achieve your goals. I am not going to attempt to write a quote like that, I am simply going to tell you the importance of self- belief.
As a Masters student, I have to write a dissertation that is 10,000 words long. Having already wrote one for my Undergrad, I know my capabilities and know this is achievable.
However, like everything you do in life, you should be passionate about it, you should have a thirst to want to study, research and write about it. You need to be passionate about it.
Yesterday, my hopes and beliefs were shut down by someone who is supposed to push me to be my absolute best and to achieve the impossible.
My thesis was apparently too advanced for Master’s level, and I should focus my time and attention on something that has already been discussed and wrote about previously. And I quote “it is not my job to change the world, it is my job to get good grades.”
I have a Degree in Human Rights, I am obtaining a Masters in Security, Peacebuilding and Diplomacy. It will be my future job to change the World, and my thesis will directly impact the career I find myself in.
As a student who needs approval from teachers, to be told to limit my thesis and to not write about something because you think it will not be worthy of a good grade is incredibly unfair and goes against what being a teacher should drive their students to do.
I have decided to believe in my capabilities. I refuse to write about something that has been written about countless of times, like he suggested, and I will take the risk of writing something groundbreaking. I may not be at PhD level, but I am somewhat of an expert in my field.
I have a Degree and over 3 years continuous volunteering experience. It is important to remember that together with these 3 years of volunteering experience, I also have 3 years of education to support my thesis.
It is important to remember the hard work and dedication I put into everything I have achieved, and it is important to remember that this has not been the first and will not be the last time I have been told no.
So believe in yourself, believe in your past experience and knowledge to help drive your future knowledge. And when someone tells you no because it has not been done or it is a stretch, then tell yourself you can, and find a way to do it.
Because you never know what you may be able to achieve with this little bit of self-belief. It is our job to change the world we live in, never forget that.
