London is a City of colour, bright lights and wonder. As a student coming from a tiny city bordering a sea of green known as Wales, it is easy to get consumed by the fascinating things that happen in London. It is also easy to get lost.
Juggling what life can throw at you, the ugly and the pretty, can be tough. Especially when you are alone in a big city, with a million priorities. What can be an eye-opening, mind-blowing experience can actually limit you and push you into a corner where you believe that you cannot do anything and instead of inspiration hitting you, inspiration becomes a far and detached feeling that you dream of.
This is what has happened to me. I have been so gracefully given an opportunity to embrace a new city, live, eat and breathe a new city. Yet I find myself taking the same route home every night to my small and enclosed room just to stare at the same four walls.
Another opportunity I have been given is to learn something new every day, studying in London is a challenge that no one can really prepare you for. There would not be enough time to prepare you for the everyday life of London; plus how relevant that is to your course and then the workload.
There can be some preparation for that, but what they do not prepare you for is your feelings and the emotions that you will feel when tackling studying.
At the beginning I mentioned the endless sea of green, now it seems I am in an endless sea of paper and strange faces. The purpose of this is, I guess, to remind yourself that some time out and some ‘you’ time, can be beneficial in a way that you don’t even realise you want or need.
Taking a step back from this, you can realise the beauty of London and what it does offer you. Taking a step back from this you can see the God-given or out-of-this-world opportunity to study what you love. And taking a step back from this all, allows you a time to remember where you started, how you got here and where you can end up.
An endless sea of green, to an endless sea of paper and faces, to finally reach an endless sea of happiness and community. For once, anyone who has moved to London, we have something in common.
We may not know each other’s faces or personality. But we collectively moved to London to be a part of something bigger and better. To make something of themselves. To grow intellectually, culturally and emotionally. We decided to become a part of London.
Let’s not forget the real reason why we are here and how beautiful this experience can be. Today I am stepping back into London.
