Can Liverpool FC Win the Champions League?

The answer is yes but a sceptical, not optimistic yes because so far Liverpool have not played a formidable team apart from Manchester City; even though Klopp already knew how they play and defeated them in the domestic league.

Liverpool is in the semi-finals of the Champions League, playing against Roma in the first leg at Anfield which will prove to be an all or nothing game.

Liverpool needs to keep a clean sheet to prevent the vital away goal where Roma managed to beat Barcelona by scoring at Camp Nou. Even though they lost 4-1 in the first leg but ended 4-4 on aggregate.

Roma managed to win their last two ties on away goals, therefore, Jurgen Klopp needs to be wary of Roma’s attacking ability.

The biggest concern for Liverpool is the defence even though this has improved in 2018 but a small lapse in concentration can lead to a goal.

For instance, Manchester City managed to score the first goal in the second leg of the quarter-final when Virgil van Dijk believed he was fouled by Raheem Sterling. He stopped while Sterling kept on going and made an easy pass to Gabriel Jesus to score within 2 minutes.

On the other hand, Liverpool scored more goals in the Champions League than any other team and have not lost a game yet. Mohammed Salah, Sadio Mane and Roberto Firmino all partook a large part of Liverpool’s goals and its creative play.

Particularly, Salah scoring 8 goals in the Champions League and 30 in the Premier League so far this season has been sensational for the club and now he is facing his former club.

Even if Liverpool do beat Roma, they will either face Bayern Munich or Real Madrid, two strong favourites to win the competition this year.

I believe if Liverpool do go to the final they will have to play their best because the last time they were in a European final against Sevilla, they were winning 1-0 by halftime so they let go of the pedal which proved to be fatal and Sevilla won the Europa League even though Liverpool did a sensational comeback against Klopp’s former team Borussia Dortmund in the semi-finals.

Nonetheless, Klopp needs to overcome Roma first to reach the final by winning at Anfield with a clean sheet and scoring an away goal at Roma’s stadium.
