In 2016 we saw global politics taken by storm. Here is an overview of what took place. The Refugee crisis in the Middle East; the British Referendum (#BREXIT); and Donald Trump became the President Elect of the United States. Not to mention Russia’s Vladimir Putin exercised military power unjustly to swing the war in Syria with rhetoric from Russia – as if they are some type of saviours. But in all truth, he has worsened a war which has displaced millions of people. It’s a sad story indeed.
On the home front the extra £350 million per week that was meant to be spent on the NHS promised by the “Leave Campaigners”- such as Boris Johnson (Home Secretary) and Nigel Farage (MEP and Former UKIP Leader) – is non-existent. Once again we were lied to by the people we elect.
The NHS is in disarray! Toddlers sleeping on chairs due to a lack of beds within the Accident and Emergency (A&E) departments; waiting times in A&E shooting up by 75% from 4 hours standard waiting time to 6 hours in many cases. Even more shockingly, within the past two weeks, cancer operations have been cancelled and we clearly have a crisis on our hands.
#BREXIT is a situation we have no clarity over 7 months after the Referendum. 75% of UK exports and trade is with the European market. What is happening with free trade? What is happening with the free movement of people? Will the 3.3 million economic migrants based in the UK have to leave? Will Brits abroad have to move back home because the Prime Minister has given no assurances as of yet on this issue?
Since Britain’s decision to leave the European Union (EU), it has been widely reported that there is a 300% rise in hate crimes against many EU migrants and other minorities. For example in 2016, a mosque was set on fire in Somerset; a Polish house was set alight in Plymouth with a letter saying, “go back to your f****** country. Next be your family”; and the NPCC lead for hate crimes said that within a week there were 1384 incidents recorded in the third week of August. Such a sad affair.
The next few years will be pivotal in UK politics and it is worth keeping an eye on global politics for some of these reasons alone.
Power to the people!
