The Netherlands played Austria in the second game of the UEFA Euro 2020 in Amsterdam.

Both teams knew a win will mean qualification to the last 16 of the Euros but it was the Netherlands who took the lead first.

The Austrian talisman, David Alaba stepped on Denzel Dumfries’ foot on the edge of the box after a heavy touch. The referee was advised to go to the VAR area but gave the penalty nonetheless. Memphis Depay scored from the spot on the 11th minute.

The lack of communication on the Austrian side almost led to Depay scoring in the 24th minute but his outside foot shot hit the side of the net.

Depay almost doubled his goal tally on the 39th minute when Patrick van Aanholt’s long pass allowed Wout Weghorst to pass to Depay across goal who had the whole net to himself but blasted over the crossbar.

The first half ended with Austria not making a threat to the Netherlands’ defence while the hosts could have scored more than 1 goal.

Second Half

On the hour-mark, from a Dutch corner, Weghorst headed the ball back across the goal for Stefan de Vrij to head the ball directly to the goalkeeper. However, the save was directed to Matthijs de Ligt, whose shot in turn was blocked by Michael Gregoritsch.

The Netherlands doubled their goal tally after a pass over the Austrian high line by Depay allowed the substitute, Donyell Malen, to run at the goal but selflessly pass to Denzel Dumfries who scored his second goal of the tournament.

Austria tried to play more attacking with Alaba taking a long shot but it did not trouble the goalkeeper.

The Netherlands top their group and qualified for the next stage of the Euros while Austria needs a win in their next game to join the Dutch.
