In the early hours of Wednesday morning, the Zimbabwean military detained President Robert Mugabe and his wife Grace in order to restore a ‘genuine democracy’ in Zimbabwe as the chairman of the Veteran Association Chris Mutsvangwa said.

On Wednesday, tanks were seen in Harare, capital of Zimbabwe.

There are also reports of people hearing at least three explosions in the northern suburbs of the capital, during this night of tension.

The army insists that what they are doing is not a takeover of power, but rather ‘a bloodless correction of gross abuse of power.’

A spokesman for the army said that the President and his wife were taken into their custody during the night and they are safe; He added that their target is not the president but the ‘criminals’ around him, and that Mr Mugabe is only being detained for his own safety.

Furthermore he stated that when they accomplish their mission everything will come back to normal.

The military vehicles have set blockades in many streets around the capital and the normal broadcasting in the nation was suspended.

This ‘bloodless correction’ took place a week after the President Mugabe sacked the Vice-President Emmerson Mnangagwa to put his wife Grace on course to his succession.

Mnangagwa left the country last week but said he would return to lead the Zimbabwe.

The citizens were warned to stay home and not to go to the centre unless they have businesses.

The US Embassy will be closed all day on Wednesday and American citizens are warned to stay in safe places.

The Foreign Office has told all British nationals in the Harare province to stay safe in their homes due to the uncertain political situation.
